Abstract

The benefits of physical activity have been widely demonstrated by researchers in different contexts. However, it is not always possible to be used in human participants of research with exercise training, due to the very long follow-up time, or the need for many participants due to prediction of abandonment, or the use of invasive procedures that would raise ethical issues. Thus, physical training protocols in experimental models have been developed over the years. The objective of this narrative review was to present different physical training protocols for experimental rodent models (rats and mice), as well as the procedures used to assess performance. This review also aimed to make academics and researchers aware of the importance of knowing the peculiarities of each model, enabling the choice of the appropriate protocol for purpose of this study, and favoring good practices in the use of animals in research. The physical training protocols for running on a treadmill, high-intensity interval physical training, swimming, resistance training by climbing stairs, weightlifting on the platform, isometric resistance training, combined physical training, and occasional physical activity are presented. Currently, the protocol most used by researchers is aerobic training on a treadmill because running is a training modality that is very accessible to the human population, and that the variables involved in prescription and safety are easily managed. However, more and more, researchers have used variations and / or combinations in studies, to investigate training protocols that are closer to what people are doing in societies. Lastly, the different training protocol options must be evaluated for each research objective, together with the possibilities of estimating the maximum load for the prescription of the appropriate intensity to which it is intended to study.
